As a Personal Support Worker, you will:

  • Assist clients of varying ages and stages with their activities of daily living
  • Assist clients with personal hygiene
  • Assist with shopping, meal planning and preparation
  • Assist with light housekeeping and keeping client environment clean, safe and secure
  • Promote client independence, self-esteem, dignity and social integration
  • Assist with medication
  • Support clients’ families

As a Personal Support Worker, you may work in a variety of healthcare settings:

  • Private homes
  • Nursing homes
  • Retirement Residences
  • Assisted Living Environments and Group Homes
  • Hospices
  • Community agencies
  • Public school systems
  • Day Program for the well frail elderly

Yorkdale’s Personal Support Worker Program enables you to fulfill your dream  in just 27 weeks, You can:

  • Earn a Personal Support Worker Certificate
  • Acquire the skills and knowledge to work as a personal support worker
  • Gain practical experience in a healthcare environment/community
  • Earn at least 9 credits towards your secondary school diploma
  • Prepare for pathway to Practical Nursing Progam

Prerequisites For Personal Support Worker Program:

  • Successful completion of Yorkdale Assessment
  • Successful interview with a Yorkdale staff member
  • Complete medical
  • Proof of updated immunization for Hepatitis B, flu shot, T.B. test or x-ray are required prior to program start date
  • Police reference check required by co-op placements
  • CPR and First Aid

There Are Two Major Components to This Program:

Yorkdale Adult Learning Centre

Part 1:In-school courses:
Monday-Friday; 8:00a.m.-3:00 p.m. for 18 weeks

Yorkdale Adult Learning Centre
Part 2: Out-of-school co-op placement in a healthcare/community setting:
Monday-Friday; 8 hours per day; 7:00a.m.-3:00p.m. for 9 weeks
