This course introduces students to the use of accounting in business. Students will learn about various types of business and business ownership practices. They will study ways in which accounting procedures are applied in the different types of business with regard to recording transactions, preparing financial statements and analyzing the process of cash management. Students will also learn how to use the Simply Accounting software. This will enable them to enter the Accounting Co-operative Education Program.

Students will learn about debit and credit cards, electronic funds transfers, certified cheques and money orders, cash and non-cash transactions in the synoptic journal and in the five special journals. Students will also prepare and analyze financial statements of partnerships and corporations by creating statements and completing ratios. The preparation of petty cash transactions, bank reconciliations, payroll entries and hands-on experience with the user friendly computerized QuickBooks Pro 2007 will directly help students in finding a workplace position. Students will also be well prepared for further accounting courses at college or university.

BBI2O: Introduction to Business - Grade 10, Open
This course introduces students to the world of business, including the concepts, functions, and skills required for meeting the challenges of operating a business in the twenty-first century on a local, national, and/or international scale. Students will also learn about personal finance, entrepreneurship, and international business. Students will prepare a business plan for an idea that interests them and present it to a mock business panel (made up of other students) for evaluation.

This course helps students prepare for business positions in their future careers. Students will focus on the development of skills required to become a successful manager, including operations management, inventory control, marketing, financial planning, scheduling, and communication. Students will also explore the management challenges of hiring, training, and motivating employees, and complying with legal requirements. Computer application software for small business will be studied.

The Co-op Accounting/Office Program has been established to allow students to improve their skills by taking an accounting, computer or English class in the morning and then to learn job skills and obtain work experience in the afternoon. During the first part of the course, the accounting or office student will learn job skills; for example, how to write a resume and cover letter, and how to conduct a successful interview. In the second part of the course, students will be placed in either Accounting or Office Co-op positions to gain work experience.

BTT2O: Introduction to Information Technology in Business, Grade 10, Open
This course introduces students to the use of information technology in the business environment. Students will learn how to use information technology in a work environment, perform electronic research, communicate electronically and use Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint. They will establish a foundation for using information technology throughout secondary school and will develop the ability to apply new technologies in their search for employment. A broad understanding of the effects of technology on business will also be developed through a variety of activities. Students will have opportunities to develop interpersonal skills and a personal portfolio of Information Technology skills and competencies.

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop the information technology skills and knowledge required in a business. Students will learn about the information technology work environment and will use industry-standard software. Using a hands-on approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software applications. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or postsecondary studies.

BTX4E: Information & Communication Technology, Grade 12, Workplace Preparation
This course provides students with the opportunity to further develop essential workplace skills in information and communication technology while working in a team environment. Using a project-based approach, students will focus on integrating software applications and applying multimedia software features. Students will expand their understanding of e-business and e-commerce environments and workplace ethics. This course will prepare students for a successful transition from secondary school to the workplace.

TGJ20: Communication Technology - Grade 10, Open
Communication technology emphasizes the development of the knowledge and skills required for the production of technical communications media. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their new knowledge and skills through a series of “hands-on” projects. These may include graphic designs, short animations, videos, and photographic displays. The design process and a variety of tools and software will be used to solve problems, complete projects and strengthen students’ ability to communicate using technology. The knowledge and skill developed in through this course will provide a basis for careers in areas such as publishing, advertising, print production, animation, photography, film, television and journalism.

course examines communications systems and design and production
processes in the areas of electronic, live, recorded, and graphic
communications. Students will develop knowledge and skills relating
to the assembly, operation, maintenance and repair of the basis

TDJ3E: Technological Design - Grade 11, Workplace Preparation
This course provides students with opportunities to apply the principles of basic design to technological challenges in industry, engineering, architecture, manufacturing, and graphics. Students will develop problem-solving and design skills through use of AutoCAD computer drafting applications. Students will learn to recognize and produce different technical drawings such as mechanical, architectural, electrical, etc., and will use technical drafting to present ideas and solutions effectively.
This course will give students the basic drafting skills to produce different types of technical drawings, such as orthographic projections, details, plans and sections. They will also acquire basic computer drafting techniques and learn how to create dimension drawings. At the end of course, the students will have developed sufficient computer drafting skills that they will be able to adapt to ongoing changes in the workplace and society.

TDJ4E: Advanced Tech Design (AutoCad 2004), Grade 12, Workplace Preparation
This course provides students with opportunities to apply the principles of technological design in communications, manufacturing, electronics, transportation, architecture, industrial products, and environmental services through the use of AutoCAD computer drafting. Students will use AutoCAD as a design and drafting tool to produce complex technical drawings in mechanical, architectural, and electrical fields.
Students will have the opportunity to create accurate technical drawings such as floor plans, sections, assembly drawings and pictorial 3-Dimensional drawings using technical reference materials including the Machiner’s Handbook and the Architectural Graphics Standards, Design and Drafting Handbook.
Students will follow the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) drawing practices
(e.g. using standardized symbols, orthographic projections, and applicable codes such as the Ontario Building Code) when creating drawings.
At the end of this course, the students will acquire sufficient knowledge and skills in design and computer drafting to help them to explore career opportunities in engineering, manufacturing, architecture or construction.

This course allows students to expand their knowledge and skill in various communications systems, design, and production processes, in the area of electronic, live, recorded, and graphic communications. They will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and abilities by creating a portfolio for future education and employment in areas such as graphic design, video, television and film production, animation, photography and web design. Students will spend time researching past and present effective communicators in the many fields found in these media. Emphasis will be placed on a wide range of self-directed individual and group student projects. Industry standards, regulations, and health and safety issues will be included, as well as the strong impact that communications technology has on our society.
ICE3E: Computer Engineering – Grade 11, Workplace Preparation
PC Repair-Hardware and Software: This course provides an excellent introduction to the career of information technology, computer repair and troubleshooting hardware and software. In-depth exposure and hands-on training for personal computer hardware, and desktop operating systems (Windows and Linux), Networking and Wireless Networking will be provided in this free course. Students will be prepared for entry level positions in the IT field.

As well as identifying careers in computer science, students will develop an understanding of the ethical use of computers and the impact of emergent technologies on society.
