WHAT
YOU WILL LEARN:
- This
course focuses on the study of literature. Students will
improve their ability to comprehend, analyze and think critically
about literature and the important social themes and messages
it communicates. Readings will focus on themes that are
relevant to living in today’s world.
COURSE
OUTLINE:
- Unit
1: Short stories, Literary devices, Paragraph writing
This unit continues the study of short stories from the Grade 11 course.
Students will discuss stories based on the elements of the short story,
especially theme. Students will also learn to identify literary devices
used in literature. We will also review paragraph structure

Unit 2: Media – News and
Advertising
This unit is a continuation of media studies from Grade 11. Students
will examine the effects of different media technologies and will explore
how media technology and media ownership affects news productions. Finally,
we will examine the impact of advertising on our culture

Unit 3: Poetry
Students will learn about the elements of the poem. Our focus will be
on the social messages of poetry, and how these are conveyed by the
structure, content and writing style of the poem. Most time will be
spent on a group project examining poetic movements in the English language,
from Renaissance to Post-Modern

Unit 4: Novel Study
To end the course we will focus on studying a novel together in class.
Our focus will be on the novel’s themes, and how those themes
connect to the life of the author as well as contemporary life

Unit 5: Independent Study Project
As part of the course, students will submit an ISU which will be either
a research paper or a literary essay. We will spend class-time occasionally
discussing the various stages of the project from start to finish

Readings will be taken from several sources, especially Imprints 12

Novel is available from the teacher with a $40 deposit
-
Students should have: a binder, a day planner and a good dictionary
and thesaurus
*This course is a requirement to receive an OSS for admission to many
College programs. It will help to prepare students to write effectively
and to pursue a career in communications based fields (eg. writing, journalism,
broadcasting). It will also encourage students to think critically about
contemporary social issues.

HOW
YOU WILL LEARN:

their language skills through reading (fiction and non-fiction),
writing, group assignments and presentations, class discussions
and lectures. Students will also work on an Independent
Study Project
