Literature
Study and Reading Expectations:
- Read,
analyze, and demonstrate understanding of texts from various periods,
especially in terms of information, ideas, themes, issues, and language

Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of fiction, drama, poetry
and non-fiction

Demonstrate an understanding of basic literary theory and criticism,
as well as the elements of style in texts from various periods

Demonstrate an understanding of English language development from Old
English to Shakespeare
Writing
Expectations:
- Use
a variety of print and electronic primary and secondary sources to gather
information for writing, using correct citation formats
- Select
and use appropriate writing forms, especially for literary essays
- Use
a variety of organizational structures and patterns to produce coherent,
creative and flowing written work

Edit, proofread and revise work independently to ensure accuracy of
information, clarity, appropriate language level and correct grammar
and usage
Media
Expectations:
- Demonstrate
an understanding of a variety of media texts, audiences and industry
practices by analyzing representations, forms, and techniques in media
works
- In
particular, students will examine the effect of technology on contemporary
methods of communication, with emphasis on Marshall McLuhan’s
communication theories

HOW
YOU WILL LEARN:

In this course, students will have the opportunity to develop their
language skills through reading (fiction and non-fiction), writing,
group assignments and presentations, class discussions and lectures.
