Upon
Successful Completion of the Program, you:

will receive the Yorkdale Certificate for Childcare
Assistant
-
may pursue further education in a Community College
and other Early Childhood Education Programs
-
have the knowledge and skills to work as a Childcare
Assistant in:
-
private, community and workplace childcare centres
-
licensed at-home daycare
-
parenting programs in a library or community centre
Prerequisites
for Admission to the Childcare Assistant Certificate
Program:
-
successful completion of the Yorkdale English Assessment
-
successful completion of an interview with a childcare
assistant teacher
-
love of children (experience in working with children
is an advantage)
-
letter of reference
-
police check
- up
to date immunization - DPT
- Flu
shot - required and requested by the day care facilities
- Step
2 - TB skin test-mandatory
- Strongly
recommend Hep B shots as osme of the Day Care Centres
require students to have this done (this is a series
of 3 shots, talk with your Doctor about this
- Proof
of having CPR (level C) and first aid
- Criminal
referece check must be carried out prior to Co-op
placement in a Day Care Centre
There
are two major components to this program:

Part
1: three
in-school courses during the first nine weeks.
Successful completion of in-school credits prior
to Part 2. |

Part
2: an out -of -school co-op placement in a licensed
daycare, nursery or other childcare facility for
the final nine weeks. Minimum 6 hours per
day. |

just 18 weeks, in Yorkdale’s Childcare Assistant
Program, you will:

learn the role of a Childcare Assistant

study child development from birth to five years old

learn about the needs of children, including children
with special needs

explore children’s books, magazines and suitable
activities for children 0-5 years old

acquire win-win strategies for dealing with inappropriate
behaviour

discuss effective ways of communicating with children

find out about the importance of play and self-esteem
when caring for children
-
converse with others about nutrition, health, safety
and first aid issues

become informed about the Ontario Childcare System

debate the strengths of Community Day Care and Home
Care for children

gain practical experience in a co-op placement

earn 6 credits towards your secondary school diploma
